USE A DECOMPOSITION TREE WHEN ANALYZING DATA IN POWER BI

 In Power BI

The decomposition tree visual in Power BI allows us to visualize data in multiple dimensions. It automatically collects data and allows us to go into details. Since it’s also an artificial intelligence (AI) visualization, we can ask it to find the next dimension to go into detail based on certain criteria. This makes it a valuable tool for conducting a temporary investigation and root cause analysis.
Now, let’s go and explore this ability that Power BI developers offer us together.

ADDING THE DECOMPOSITION TREE TO A POWER BI REPORT

Let’s open the Power BI Desktop application and add the decomposition tree from the visual elements on the right.

1

Let’s add the value you want to analyze in the Analysis field. Today, we will perform an analysis about Sales. When you drag and drop the SalesAmount value to the Analysis field, you will see it appear in the Decomposition Tree visual.

2

Let’s add the fields we want to break down to the Description Criteria section of the Decomposition Tree image. I will break down the color, model and size here.

3

Let’s click on the (+) icon that appears on the Decomposition Tree image to perform the analysis with breakdowns. After that, we will choose the criterion we want to break down.

4

With this stage being complete, we have officially realized our first breakdown. Let’s proceed in the same way in the second breakdown and select our color and size criteria.

5

This way, we got to see the breakdowns with the Decomposition Tree by selecting the area and criteria we wanted to analyze. Here is the result of all our steps:

This is how the Composition Trees -which are used in many reports- are used. We believe that it will be very helpful and beneficial for you with your work!

Hope to see you again, have a great day!
